Ibiza, or Eivissa, the left (SW) of the three Baleares. Today the essence of dumb German summer-tourism with big hotels, drunkennes party and tits. Maybe Rena, Irmela's daughter, has been made there? Her name's along a Hotel Rena as I heard.

In the thirties of 19th century though it was a lonely, very folkloristic place, already a refuge for strangers, but then in peasant-houses inmidst a beautiful nature. Though everybody was hiding something, nobody cared about the (real or false) name of his neighbours. Walter Benjamin lived in the Village of St.Antonio for two summers, his "secretary", a young German from Hamburg, turned out to be a Nazi - but Benjamin never got it. Paul Gauguin, the grandson of the painter, lived there and many others. Raoul Villain, who shot Jean Jaurès, built a house and hide here...before he was shot on the beach too...

Walter Benjamin in a letter to Gretel Karplus:

"....als ein flüchtiger Bekannter des Hauses auftauchte, ein skandinavischer Bursche, der sich in den Gegenden, wo es Fremde gibt, nur selten sehen lässt und in einem vergrabenen Gebirgsdorf wohnt. Er ist im Übrigen ein Enkel des Malers Paul Gauguin und heisst genauso wie sein Grossvater. Am anderen Tage machte ich die genauere Bekanntschaft dieser Figur und sie war bestimmt ebenso faszinierend wie die seines Gebirgsdorfes, in dem er der einzige Fremde ist ... ...

Dann setzte man uns in einer versteckten Bucht ab. Und dort bot sich ein Bild von derart unverrückbarer Vollkommenheit, dass etwas Seltsames, aber nicht unbegreifliches in mir sich ereignete: ich sah es nämlich eigentlich garnicht; es fiel mir nicht auf; es war vor Vollkommenheit am Rande des Unsichtbaren."
